Valentine’s Day Activities for Your Children and their Babysitter

Thinking of spending a romantic evening with your partner for St. Valentine’s Day, but what to do with the kids? Spend a bit of time to make the evening special not only for the two of you, and also for the kids. Plan a few special Valentine’s Day activities to make the evening memorable for both the baby sitter and your children.

Valentine’s Day Meal for Kids

Set the mood for a happy Valentine’s Day for your children. Prepare a special Valentine’s Day supper before you leave for your special time. Fry up some grilled cheese sandwiches, then use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut valentine shapes from the center of the sandwiches. Serve these sandwiches amidst a meal of bright red colors. Serve tomato soup or tomato vegetable soup, and float heart shaped crackers on top. For dessert serve strawberries or raspberries on top of strawberry ice cream and jell-o.

Heartwarming Activities for Kids

Ahead of time bake some sugar cookies and cut them in the shape of hearts. Make up some icing colored red and pink. While the kids are watching movies, they can decorate the cookies with icing and add candy sprinkles.

Loveable Crafts for Kids

Assemble together paper doilies, red and pink tissue paper and construction paper, red and pink ribbon, white paper, glue sticks, scissors, tape, crayons, markers or pencil crayons, glitter, flowered wrapping paper and assorted paper cut outs or stickers from the craft store. Cut out a few heart shapes in different sizes from stiff cardboard for easy tracing. Leave this craft box with the sitter who can pull out this box of arts and crafts treasures while you are out. Let your sitter know they can take home their Valentine’s Day creations as well.

Animated True Love Movies for Kids

Rent a delightful animated romance for your children which is not very mushy. The animated adventures of Shrek in either Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007) or Shrek Forever After (2010) are wonderful movies of true love. Other classic romantic animated adventures include Pocahantas (1995), The Lion King (1994), Beauty and the Beast (1991), 101 Dalmations (1961), or Lady and the Tramp (1955).

Romantic Comedies for Kids and Sitters

Both your sitter and your children may enjoy relaxing to The Princess Bride (1987), Groundhog Day (1993), You’ve Got Mail (1998), Kate and Leopold (2001), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) or Mamma Mia! (2008).

Jeopardy! Valentine’s Day Special

Talk to your children about the challenges of robotic artificial intelligence and the challenges presented by natural language programming to a computer system. Encourage them to watch the Jeopardy! game show where the computer, Watson, will challenge former Jeopardy! champions in three shows the first on Valentine’s Day, and followed up on February 15, and 16.
